Whatever happened to TRY BEFORE YOU BUY?
Case in point, CDs!
Years ago FM stations use to broadcast the entire content of newly released LPs. Most of this was done late night (somewhere between the hours of one and five AM) but at least you still got the chance to hear the album before you laid out some serious SHNIT for it. With all the new technology available today it makes you wonder why programs like these have completely disappeared. Maybe there is a good reason. Could it be that ten out of eleven tracks are total SHNIT? I dunno, maybe I'm just getting too old to appreciate the beauty of a thirty minute two chord one string guitar solo. Since no one else seems interested in performing such a vital service I asked my friends over at Rapidthingys.Com if they might consider hosting such a program and I got a very favorable response. There were several stipulations that were required to perform this task. The contents of the Cd has to be streamed in such a manner and format to protect the website, the artist and the record label from potential pirates (you know who you are don't I?).
A company in FRANCE called RADIO BLOG provides software which encodes the original music files into FM quality streaming files and did I mention that this software is FREE? It allows the listener to hear the content at an "almost palletable" level but makes copying a waste of time, you know like Sirius Satellite Radio. Rapidthingys already provides several of these "feeds" for its members and they will be extending one of their "Try B4 You Buy" services for us on a trial basis. Their main concern was bandwidth usage for a "public" stream and those of us who PAY for webhosting services can certainly appreciate their concerns. Nonethless they agreed and starting today there will be a FREE streaming audio channel available (for a limited time) to us SHNITHEADS. BTW, if you like their service you might consider contacting them and exploring their full featured options. The free service will vary in content daily and will offer all venues of music; today I think its comtemporary jazz. We hope you try it out and perhaps this project will be expanded in the future. It never hurts to hope!
